Professional Development
Below are professional development opportunities available at The Ohio State University:
President’s and Provost’s Leadership Institute
Successful academic leaders create a productive place for everyone to work. They must be able to motivate people to work well together; academic leaders rarely exercise their full authority, relying instead on the leadership skills of persuasion, coaching, and achieiving consensus. The Leadership Institute focuses on long-term faculty leadership development, its goal being to help leaders develop themselves and their leadership skill so as to become highly effective in the academic environment. The institute focuses on the nature of effective leadership rather than on the tasks for which academic leaders are responsible. The two-year Leadership Institute utilizes a variety of learning experiences, including:
- A series of twelve experiential workshops
- A project developed and completed by each participant
- A mentoring relationship with an experienced academic leader
- Small and informal interactive lunches with university leaders
- Lunch presentations by university leaders
The Women’s Place Staff Leadership Series
The Women’s Place (TWP) is committed to expanding opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power at the university. With this goal informing our efforts, TWP is sponsoring a leadership initiative specifically for staff women at the university. This year-long project will focus on providing both skill building and leadership development activities for university staff members who would like to develop and enhance their leadership abilities. Participants will meet regularly for group discussions, learning from guest facilitators, and self-reflection. They will also have the opportunity for informal group gatherings with senior staff women at the university and peer mentoring. Please view all relevant documents below. Applications are generally accepted just prior to fall quarter.
Association of Staff and Faculty Women (AFPW)
AFPW is a dynamic organization committed to supporting the professional development of all staff and faculty women at The Ohio State University. ASFW, as volunteer organization, supports women on campus by providing networking opportunities, coordinating unique programming, and connecting women.
